About 28/78 New Music Ensemble

Who are we?

28/78 New Music Ensemble is a student-run performing ensemble at University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. The ensemble focuses on the performance of contemporary music works from a diverse array of composers. 28/78 was formed in March 2018 by conductor Andrew Lu, with founding members Laila Mameesh, Scott Pastor, Thomas Hubel, Joshua Dunsford, Diego Bustamante, Tristen Collinsworth, Fernando Lozano, Micah Vogel, Sabrina Boggs, Anne Plescia, and Laura Robb Martín.

our goals

The goals of 28/78 are to:
  1. Provide a valuable supplement to ensemble members' musical education
  2. Become ambassadors of the Conservatory's contemporary music scene
  3. Encourage the listening to and performance of new music in the Conservatory and greater Stockton communities
  4. Commission and promote the performance of works by a diverse range of composers.

What we do

The ensemble works to achieve its goals by hosting the annual 28/78 New Music Festival, presenting collaborative concerts, bringing guest artists and speakers to campus, and sharing the elements of contemporary music with the Pacific community through Open 78 workshops.

behind the name

The name 28/78 is credited to Peter Witte, the Dean of the Conservatory of Music. Since its founding in 1878, Pacific’s Conservatory has had a significant impact in the field of new music. Howard Hanson, a prolific composer, conductor, and educator, was Dean of the Conservatory from 1919 to 1924. During his time at Pacific, Hanson championed new works by organizing new music concerts, a rare cultural event at the time. 20 years later, a budding jazz musician would enroll in the College of the Pacific. Dave Brubeck was not only a pioneer, using odd meters in jazz, but was also renowned for his dedication to civil rights. The Conservatory’s sesquicentennial and bicentennial fall on 2028 and 2078 respectively. 28/78, formatted like an eyeglasses prescription, looks towards the future of music at Pacific, both near and far, while paying homage to the Conservatory's history and impact on music thus far.
